making our action count
This training focuses on building the core skills of Strategyāthe ability to design and plan in ways that are effective, adaptable, and responsive to changing realities. Using a hands-on and applied-experiential learning method, participants will learn to effectively analyse contexts, generate vision, identify opportunities and challenges, and develop responsive plans to move towards objectives. At this crucial time for our social movements, the need for focused, well-crafted, and well-informed strategising couldnāt be more important.
How do we better understand the role and significance of strategy? How do we vision and develop strategies that can be genuinely responsive and adaptive, while also decisively moving us towards our goals?
There are many different formats and approaches to strategising that may be applied to social change work. Amongst all these, there are certain elements in strategic planning processes that are fundamental. We have developed a āstrategy arcā which brings together a range of key components covering eight stages of strategic development. The training will follow the structure of this arc.Ā
We will spend time exploring each stage, drilling deeper to understand its logic, and the skills, tools, and adaptations needed to carry us from clarifying purpose to realising our goals. Weāll explore methods that enable us to develop clear pathways for action, building the capacity and power needed to follow them, and the responsiveness to keep learning and adapting as we go. And weāll explore ways to make strategising processes inclusive and motivating.Ā
āWhat can we do now in order to be able to do tomorrow what we are unable to do today?ā (Paulo Freire).
The structure will enable us to explore cutting edge approaches to:

Sergio (all pronouns) was born in Romania and migrated to Germany in the early 2010s. In the past, he was a social worker with homeless people and a social consultant for Eastern European migrants for various organisations. Trained as a filmmaker, he spent two years making a documentary about the ācivic reawakeningā in Romania and the waves of protest it brought with it. In connection to this, Sergio is currently co-steering the development of an online open-source participative knowledge production platform on activism in Romania. Over the past nine years, Sergiu has offered his skills to various journalists, grassroots collectives and campaigns, mostly working within the labour rights, climate justice, international solidarity and anti-authoritarian movements in Germany and Romania. Nonetheless, his biggest focus since 2020 has been his work as an organiser with the anarcho-syndicalist Free Workers Union, where he focuses mostly on organising Romanian migrant workers on construction sites, in factories and in the agricultural field.
